I wrote this review on July 25, 2019. Considering the recent success of The Suicide Squad, I thought I’d share my thoughts on this movie and the fate of the DC movies.

I had a lot of fun with this movie. I don’t know if it was on purpose, but I think this movie was DC’s way of apologizing to its fans for messing up the universe so badly.

The Silver Screen Shazam

I’d like to think that Shazam’s crisp look and aloof charm was them telling us that this is the new DC. Fun, interesting, heroic, and full of growth and potential. I’d like to think that Thadeus and all his dark, broody, scary demons were all relics of Snyder and the gritty past of DC. If you consider how Aquaman turned out, it further convinces you that the bright, colorful and cocky Aquaman is the future of the universe, and the dark, angry Manta is the old DC.

I also was hoping that I’d win the lottery. Shazam! Is just fun, and does a good job of not taking anything too seriously, and really focusing on making a good coming-of-age story, told through the lens of a superhero movie.

DCCU Predictions

I’d watch this movie more if I was younger, but I’d also enjoy it if I ended up seeing it again. It’s childish, but a good watch. 7/10. I’d much rather watch a DC universe led by this Shazam than their current Superman, but considering that they fired Cavill, I’m not sure I even care.

Shazam! is currently streaming on HBOMAX (not HBOGo, which is different. Duh. Stupidhead. Didn’t you know?), and available to rent on a few more sites.
